RANT! Professional football must change their overtime system

RANT! Professional football must change their overtime system

I write this just a few days after the NFC championship game for the 2007 season. In this game, Green Bay hosted a frigid game between their beloved Packers and the New York Giants. The game was well played by both teams and ended in a tie at 20.

As dictated by the rules, the teams then met to flip the coin again and the Packers won the toss. Within the NFL, overtimes are decided by the first team to score any kind of point. The typical strategy is to get close enough for field goal and end the OT quickly. This definitely favors the team that wins the OT toss!

As fate would have it, the Packers turned over the ball and the Giants won the game with their own field goal. While this particular instance provided both teams an opportunity to have the ball, the rules are not that fair.

Sudden death is not an effective way to settle an important football game. Rather it would be far more fair to have rules that are similar to college football and most high school leagues. The ball should be placed at a particular yardage marker (I suggest the 50 yard line) and then each team is given the opportunity to score. They should be allowed to earn first downs and they should be forced to attempt 2 point conversions after a touchdown. Each team should have ball an equal number of times to respond to the other team’s scores.

Regardless of which official rules the league would adopt, the current rules are not designed to achieve a fair outcome.

HEY NFL, GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER AND DEVELOP RULES THAT ARE FAIR!

RANT! Drugs and bad conduct in professional sports (again)

RANT! Drugs and bad conduct in professional sports (again)

I find myself writing on this subject again. I wrote about it when the lowlife Michael Vick pled guilty to animal cruelty charges and now I write as Barry Bonds is indicted for lying while under oath.

I know that most of the commentary on the web and the mainstream media is regarding Mr. Bonds use of steroids. But that isn’t the charge! Rather, he is being charged that he obstructed justice by lying under oath. Even Martha Stewart spent time in prison for a similar violation.

Lying under oath is a serious charge and the talking heads like Charles Barkley don’t seem to get it. They think this is a witch hunt about steroid use. It isn’t. It is about lying under oath when you shouldn’t lie. At a minimum he should have cited his 5th amendment rights when asked the question.

I don’t know if Mr. Bonds is guilty and in the US we are innocent until proven guilty. However, if Mr. Bonds is guilty of this transgression then

MAKE AN EXAMPLE OUT OF BONDS AND THROW THE BOOK AT HIM!

RANT! Drugs and bad conduct in professional sports

RANT! Drugs and bad conduct in professional sports

I am sick and tired of the bad attitude and the drugs in professional sports. I know that many athletes say that they aren’t heroes and they shouldn’t be held to a higher standard. I tend to agree with them but can’t we at least hold them to the same level of conduct that we hold our own co-workers?

If my co-worker was found to be sleeping with the boss in order to get ahead, they would both be dismissed from their position. If they lied on their resume, they would be fired. If they were salespeople and they falsified an order, they would be fired.

Similarly, if I go into work tomorrow and strike my boss with a fist (sometimes I have wanted to) then I would be fired and possibly be charged with a crime.

So why is it okay to have steroid use in sports? That is cheating.

Why is it okay for players to go into the stands and strike a spectator? I don’t care if that spectator was heckling you. You don’t hit them.

As I write this, Michael Vick recently pled guilty to training and fighting dogs. We should throw the book at him just like we would for any lowlife.

Some athletes say that they are simply entertainers and therefore shouldn’t be held to a hero’s standard. When was the last time that Dennis Miller walked into the audience and struck a heckler? Entertainers need to be judged as people and citizens and not get special treatment.

DON’T HOLD ATHLETES TO A HIGHER STANDARD – HOLD THEM TO THE SAME STANDARD AS ALL PEOPLE!

RANT! Golf at a decent speed

RANT! Golf at a decent speed

I play a round of golf in 4 hours and 15 minutes (faster if I am with some of my best golf friends). If I am golfing in a two-some then I will be faster still.

While most courses are big on keeping the golfers moving, there is a limit to what is realistic. There is no reason for a two-some that is playing after a four-some to hit into the group. They are going to be slower than you are – deal with it. They have more people than you do so they can probably take you in a fight.

If you are in that much of a hurry that you can’t afford to take 4:15 or 4:30, take up a new hobby! If you are sitting behind a four-some and they are playing at a reasonable speed than just take your time.

  • Hit a few extra putts.
  • Enjoy the fresh air.
  • Find elephants and zebras in the clouds like you did when you were a kid.
  • Watch the geese make a mess of the course.
  • Scare frogs into the water hazards. But…

…DON’T PUSH THE GROUP AHEAD OF YOU IF THEY ARE ALREADY KEEPING A GOOD PACE! LET THEM ENJOY THEIR GAME AND EXCURSION!
