What is easy isn’t always what is right…

What is easy isn’t always what is right…

Scott McKain, an adviser to many on how to more effectively run a business, just did a great article on how NBC screwed up with this Leno at 10 problem.

What Scott doesn’t point out in his advice is that the change is not always necessary for the good of the company.  In this case, Conan was getting his butt kicked by the more experienced (and more entertaining) Letterman.

Scott’s article is excellent.  Jump over and read it.  Here is some of his advice:

1) Don’t EVER make the assumption that ANY productive employee is ready to be put out to pasture. We work for many reasons, and only ONE of them is money. Zucker’s assumption that Leno was wealthy enough and would want to ride off in the sunset started the disastrous chain of events.

2) Sometimes we have to allow good colleagues to depart. If NBC would have just allowed Conan to move on, instead of trying to sacrifice its business plan to keep him, they would have been in much better shape.

3) We must look to make the decisions that are best for the long-term…what fixes a short-term challenge may create lasting problems. That’s what happened here.

NBC to move Leno?

NBC to move Leno?

I am not a bit surprised that Leno is in trouble at NBC. Moving that format to 10P in the 21st century was foolish. It may have been okay in the 50s or 60s but that show was doomed the day that Jay Leno walked on to the stage.

Of course, it doesn’t help that Conan is a flop in the 11:30 time slot.

The executives that put this together should be fired. It should be the first thing that Comcast does now that they have control of the company from GE. Fire the buffoons that did this. Talk about destroying a valuable commodity! Warren Buffet says that you should only invest in companies that can be profitable even if idiots run them. I don’t know if I agree with that advice but I definitely don’t think you should invest in companies that are run by buffoons!

Letterman is beating Conan

Letterman is beating Conan

It appears that I am not the only one that thinks that Conan is boring.  Letterman took over the top spot in ratings last week when he had Julia Roberts as his guest and Conan had Eddie Murphy.

Conan’s market share has dropped 56% since he took over on the first of June.

Looks like it is time to start looking for a replacement to the very boring Conan.

Obama Endorses Conan O’Brien

Obama Endorses Conan O’Brien

It seems that there is one thing that President Barach Hussein Obama and I disagree on (only ONE thing you ask).  I think that Conan O’Brien is not up to the task of the Tonight Show.  BHO thinks that he is.

I am so glad that the leader of the free world is worrying about poor Conan in this time of economic unrest and while North Korea is playing nuclear games with us.

I picked up this video from the very funny blog, CrZay.

Conan O’Brien is boring

Conan O’Brien is boring

On Monday, Conan O’Brien was given the keys to one of the best jobs in television.  The Tonight Show has been going strong since 1954 and is one of the longest running shows ever.  It was first hosted by Steve Allen, then Jack Parr (very shortly), followed by the masterful Johnny Carson, and finally Jay Leno.  The producers should have left the show with people that have a first name beginning with “J” since Conan simply doesn’t have what it takes.

It is interesting that Conan took the job over from Leno where he comes from taking the David Letterman vacated show.  Letterman was upset that he didn’t take over for Carson and left to form a show on a rival network.  Leno and Letterman have been battling for the entire time and Leno consistently won.  Now it appears that Letterman will easily have the upper hand since there is no way the very un-funny O’Brien can compete.

I feel sorry for Conan. He moved to Los Angeles from New York City. I sure hope that he is renting his home because I will be amazed if he will survive long on this show. He simply doesn’t have what it takes. He will do moderately well since actors and singers need to do the show to hawk their latest projects but they will quickly opt for doing Letterman first and then eventually get around to appearing with O’Brien.  The shows ratings are in for a huge fall!

The jury is still out if Leno’s new gig will be successful.  If it is a raving success then Conan is in for more of a challenge as the comparison will continue and they will split the audience. Why would a viewer spend an hour with Jay at 10, watch the news, and then be bored with the inferior Conan at 11:30?  If he fails, he may come crawling back to his old job and kick Conan out of his old chair.
